What is Adhar Virtual ID and Limited KYC and UID token?

UIDAI(unique identification authority of India) has taken a new step to secure adhar data by introducing 16-digit random ID called as virtual ID.This step is taken prior to the latest unverified data breach incidents covered by journalists.

How will VID work?

>>This is two-tier security mechanism.
>>It is 16-digit random number mapped with Adhar number.
>>There can only be one active and valid VID at any time.
>>Noone can derive adhar number from VID number.
>>only adhar holder can generate VID.
>>It is temporary hence agencies will not use it for de-duplication.

How will it protect existing adhar number?

VID prohibits direct sharing of adhar number of customers which store on various databases. It looks promising but the government needs better regulation over storage of adhar data on various servers.

Limited KYC:

UIDAI introduces limited KYC to limit access to adhar details.
It has divided into two AUA(authentication user agency).

1.Global AUA: It has access to full e-kyc details and can store adhar number on their system.

2.Local AUA: It has limited access to e-KYC details.

UID Token:

since VID is temporary and use of adhar number is restricted,  agencies will need a way to uniquely identify their customers on their systems. For this, a 76 character alphanumeric 'UID Token' will be generated for system use.

Agencies can uniquely identify their customer without storing adhar number on a system using UID token.
